One of the more emotional moments of the Doig Medal Presentation Dinner on Thursday night came when Fremantle paid tribute to one of their greatest servants, Dr Jeffrey Boyle.
A physiotherapist at Fremantle since 1994, Boyle announced his retirement to the playing group in the changerooms following the club’s final game of the 2020 season against the Western Bulldogs at Cazaly’s Stadium.
For context of Boyle’s longevity at Fremantle, he has treated and worked with every player in the club’s 26-year-history.
Fremantle leader Alex Pearce added to the tribute, highlighting the importance of Boyle’s work in his recovery.
“I’ve obviously been in rehab a long time in the past few years and there’s been a few people that have helped me,” Pearce said.
“The one man who’s been there the whole time was Jeff. I know he’s been at Fremantle for 26 years and I’ve only been here for seven but he’s left a huge mark on me.
“I get treatment five days a week and Jeff’s always been there for me and he never turns me away.
“It’s pretty hard to put into words about how appreciative I am of all the work he’s done.
“To Jeff, you’ve done a lot for me and I really appreciate it. I wish you all the best for what’s to come.”
