Small forward Sam Switkowski is pleased with how Fremantle's new-look forward line is gelling at pre-season training.
Freo have enjoyed having a full-strength forward group on the track in recent weeks following Jesse Hogan’s return to full training.
Fremantle could have at least four players in their forward half who arrived at the club in the past two seasons, including Switkowski via the draft and recent signings Hogan, Rory Lobb and Brandon Matera.
Switkowski said that speedy midfielder Travis Colyer could also spend time up front.
“It’s looking really good,” Switkowski said.
“We’ve got Hogan and Lobb obviously and Colyer will probably go a little bit through there as well.
“It’s just exciting as we have a lot more talls and marking targets and additionally, the way we’re moving the footy at the moment is really good.
“We’re looking to get it in there a lot more, so as a small forward, it’s exciting to have the ball coming in and getting a few more crumbs.”
While the competition for spots among Fremantle’s tall forwards has been the talk of this pre-season, senior coach Ross Lyon will also have a number of options with his small forwards.
Michael Walters is expected to play a mix of forward and midfield in 2019 and the likes of Switkowski, Brandon Matera and Hayden Ballantyne will all vie for selection up front.
“I’m not sure how Ross will line up the forward line but there are certainly spots there,” Switkowski said.
“We have a good group of smalls with Brandon and Ballas, even the likes of Stefan Giro. We can have a number of guys running through there so it’s really exciting.
“I’m just working as hard as I can at the moment. If there’s a spot for me, that’s great. I’ll just keep doing my thing, play my role and, hopefully, it works out.”
Switkowski said the excitement is building at the club with pre-season games approaching.
Fremantle will play an intra-club game on Friday ahead of their opening JLT Community Series clash against Collingwood on Labour Day on Monday 4 March at Joondalup Arena.
“It’s coming around really quickly,” Switkowski said.
“It’s a really fun time of year leading into the season for players and coaches as well as the fans.”
