On Saturday when Fremantle take on North Melbourne at Metricon Stadium, David Mundy will do something on a game day he hasn’t done previously in his 330-game career.
To get to the game, Fremantle will fly in and out of the Gold Coast from their hub in Cairns, a two-hour journey each way.
Mundy’s 150+ travel trips to date have usually involved flying out two days before the game, allowing the team time to settle in and get used to the different time zone.
While the early morning travel trip for the 2.10pm (AEST) game will be a first for all players, Mundy said he was confident the team would handle the scenario.
“We have a challenging week this week with some travel differences coming up. We’re travelling down to the Gold Coast on the day of the game, I’ve never done that before,” Mundy told ABC Radio.
“For the group, it’s going to be another hurdle to jump but we feel like our system and the way that we prepare for games, and the group that we’ve got at the moment, I think we’re right up for that challenge.
“Hopefully, we can go out and produce some Justin Longmuir inspired Fremantle football.”
Mundy said Fremantle were hungry to back up a good team performance from their 14-point win against Melbourne in round 16.
“If this season has shown us anything, it’s that anything can happen,” Mundy said.
“While we’re pretty happy with how we’ve been able to perform, this week is a new challenge and we’re aware of that. We’re not taking North Melbourne lightly.”
