Fremantle will be aiming to take advantage of their power around stoppages as they prepare to take on Melbourne on Monday night at Cazaly’s Stadium.
Senior coach Justin Longmuir said on Saturday in Cairns that a shuffle of the forward line was required in order to benefit from the entries Freo were getting.
“We need to rejig our forward line a little bit, create the right roles for our players and see if we can maximise the inside 50s we’re getting at the moment,” Longmuir said.
“There’s no point us winning the clearances by so much if we can’t score”.
Fremantle won the clearance count 38-19 and only had five less inside 50s (43-38) in their 27-point round 15 loss to Richmond on Wednesday.
Longmuir said that there were many components to consider with restructuring the forward line, adding that the issues don’t just rest on the forwards’ shoulders.
“There’s a lot of components that go into it, it’s not just our forwards all the time,” Longmuir said.
“Sometimes it’s the midfielders kicking it in there, sometimes it’s the midfielders collapsing on the forwards. Sometimes we’re getting forced wide and slow.
“We’d like to give our forwards a little bit more isolation and a bit more space for each other to work in and that’s probably the starting point we worked on this week.”
Longmuir also spoke about the current role of Michael Walters, saying he believes having Walters in the forward line significantly improves Freo’s chances to hit the scoreboard.
“A lot of people, me in particular, think that we are a more dangerous forward line with him in there,” Longmuir said
“We’ve just got to find the right role for him, and we’ve got to work through the split between midfield and forward.”
