Andrew Brayshaw was taken aback by the generosity of the Purple Army after Fremantle fans helped raise more than $50,000 through pledges for the Starlight Purple Haze Game on Saturday at Optus Stadium.
While the result didn’t go Freo’s way in a 38-point loss to GWS, Fremantle fans pledged more than $6,700 per goal to help seriously ill children and their families.
Thanks to South32, Starlight’s Fundraising Partner, all pledges were matched up to $50,000, meaning Fremantle’s eight goals on the day raised more than $100,000 in total.
“That’s great. At the end of the day, this is just a game, so to raise that amount of money for the kids is amazing and it puts things into perspective,” Brayshaw said.
“Thanks to everyone who pledged and donated. It will go towards a lot of good.”
It was Freo’s final of seven straight home games at Optus Stadium before the final four rounds in the Queensland hub.
Brayshaw said Freo would be hungry to get results on the board for the fans.
“(The home stretch) has been awesome, we’re very fortunate to play in front of such an amazing crowd and we tried to get around them after the loss,” Brayshaw said.
“We’ll miss them over the next few weeks but we’ll be back sooner rather than later and we love them all.
“We really appreciate everything they do coming to the game and getting around us.
“We’ll do the best we can in Gold Coast and Cairns and try to get a few more wins for them.”
