Fremantle are looking to add to their run in the upcoming 2020 NAB AFL National Draft, according to senior coach Justin Longmuir.
Speaking on ABC Radio ahead of Saturday’s clash with GWS, Longmuir gave an insight into how Fremantle will approach their list management in the off-season.
“We probably still need to keep building our outside run (at the draft),” Longmuir told ABC Radio.
“I think it’s something we’ve addressed in the previous draft, but we still need those players around the square to be able to, (with their) speed I think, to be able to break the game open.
“It’s something that’s been a little bit stagnant for us this year and we’ve probably lacked a little bit of creativity and speed on the outside.”
Longmuir said Freo already have some players capable of fitting that criteria from the 2019 draft.
“We feel Michael Frederick, Liam Henry, Hayden Young, with his kicking off half back, are going to be those type of players in the future for us,” Longmuir said.
“We probably just need to keep adding to that.”
Longmuir added that he would like to build some depth in Fremantle’s ruck stocks.
“I also think we probably need another developing ruckman or a developing key forward who can play in the ruck. I think down the track, will really complement us well,” Longmuir said.
Longmuir said he would prefer Fremantle focused on the draft instead of trading or free agency.
“I think our philosophy is to go to the draft (based on) where we sit with our list profile,” Longmuir said.
“I think that’s the best angle for us to approach, especially to get another early pick this year.
“The other thing added to that, is how many list spots are going to be available next year with the reduction with list sizes.
“We’ll continue to work through all of those factors and see where it puts us at the end of the year.”
