All Olive wants for her 90th birthday on Saturday is a Fremantle Dockers win.
The 22-year-member will celebrate her 90th on the same day Freo take on GWS, but Olive still isn’t sure if she’ll be able to celebrate at Optus Stadium.
Whether she’s watching from home or at the ground, she tapes every game so she can watch them again later.
“Going to the footy is my main hobby and I just love it. I also tape all the games so I can watch them again, it’s a wonderful day out,” Olive said.
Olive’s attachment to Fremantle football goes back to from before she was born, when her dad Charlie Kavanagh played for East Fremantle during a highly successful period for the Sharks.
East Fremantle won four consecutive flags between 1928 and 1931, and while Kavanagh didn’t play in any of the Grand Finals, he played 13 games in that time and kicked 15 goals.
“Dad played between 1929 and 1931. He wasn’t one of the great footballers but he played with the likes of Jack Sheedy and he was still in the side,” Olive said.
“I also lived in Mosman Park and my husband played in the ex-scholars which was all Fremantle at the time.
“I loved Freo right from their very first game. I remember standing up behind the goals, where the drums were. I loved it right from the very start.”
While the day didn’t go Freo’s way, the 2013 Grand Final remains Olive’s highlight as a Freo fan.
‘When we went to the Grand Final, all the family went over to Melbourne. Even though we lost, we had the greatest time ever,” Olive said.
“People were so good to us over there, we loved that. If they ever get in if I’m still around I’ll be there again!”
