There might be some left-field goal celebrations when Fremantle take on GWS at Optus Stadium for the 2020 Starlight Purple Haze Game.
Traditionally, Fremantle host their Starlight Star children as honorary Dockers for the day, running out with the players and even singing the team song after a win.
But with the Starlight Stars watching from the stands in 2020 due to Covid-19 protocols, the Freo players have come up with other ideas to get the kids involved.
Freo’s Starlight ambassadors Michael Walters, Andy Brayshaw, Liam Henry, Bailey Banfield and Griffin Logue had video calls on Thursday with Freo’s three Starlight Stars, Rohan, Sapphire and Harrison.
The celebration talk started when Rohan asked Sonny and Liam to do a cartwheel if they kick a goal against the Giants.
While Sonny loves a big celebration, he said he would see how Freo are going on the scoreboard first.
“I'd love to do a cartwheel but I don't think my hammies will hold up!” Sonny said with a laugh.
Rohan’s dad, Mike, had another idea that gained traction, suggesting Walters pay homage to Freo legend Jeff Farmer by doing ‘The Wiz’.
Andy was excited to see Sapphire presented with a no.8 jersey to wear on game day, as Andy is her favourite player.
He said if he kicks a goal against the Giants, he would do a ‘bunny ears’ celebration as a special tribute to Sapphire’s pet bunny rabbits, Billy and Willo.
“Unfortunately, I don’t kick many goals! In the unlikely chance I kick a goal, or in the very likely chance Sonny kicks a goal, I’ll do the bunny ears,” Andy said.
And the more goals the better for Freo and the Starlight Children’s Foundation!
As of Friday morning, Freo fans have pledged more than $2500 per goal to help seriously ill children and their families.
