Fremantle’s game style under new senior coach Justin Longmuir is starting to come together, according to the likes of Jonathan Brown and Garry Lyon.
The Fox Footy presenters were full of praise for Freo in Monday night’s episode of On the Couch as they analysed Fremantle’s 12-point win against Collingwood in round nine.
Fremantle were scoreless in the opening term but Brown praised Freo’s defensive structure that limited the usually fast-starting Collingwood.
“It was the best scoreless quarter I’ve ever seen. This is what Fremantle do really well, they just block the corridor,” said Brown while discussing a clip with Collingwood in possession on the wing.
“Brett Bewley is the fat-side winger 100 metres from the ball and they hold their discipline all day long, usually Bewley and (Adam) Cerra so (Collingwood) just can’t get back through the corridor.
“They were very disciplined and that carries throughout the whole game.”
Brown also praised Mitch Crowden’s running effort in the third term, which led to an intercept mark and goal as Collingwood looked to move the ball out of defence.
“You see Mitch Crowden here, every now and again there is a hole and you’ve just got to gut (run) it,” Brown said.
“That’s Crowden, that just exemplified Fremantle’s heart and spirit in that game.”
Lyon said Longmuir had been doing a great job as senior coach.
“Justin Longmuir has got to be given a lot of credit,” Lyon said.
“I know all year he’s been going well and (Fremantle’s) been going well enough.
“But that’s the buy in that we saw, that is complete buy in in style of game and execution.”
