Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe is set to return to full training next week in a bid to play against Collingwood in round nine, according to senior coach Justin Longmuir.

Fyfe missed the RAC Derby due to a hamstring injury and will also sit out Monday night’s clash against Geelong at Optus Stadium.

Longmuir remains hopeful that the dual Brownlow Medallist will be fit to face the Magpies the following Sunday.

“Nat’s tracking really well,” Longmuir said.

“Obviously we’re being a little bit more cautious with him now and made sure that he’s ticked every box.

“I saw him out there running before (on Saturday) and he’ll have a full week of footy training next week and hopefully play.”

Longmuir said Fremantle’s midfield was found out at times against West Coast and feels the return of Fyfe can help Fremantle maintain a consistent standard.

“We’ve had patches in games where we’ve been able to compete really well and we’ve been able to match it with opposition midfields,” Longmuir said.

“It’s just that consistency across four quarters. I think in particular at the centre bounce.

“West Coast were able to break the game open last week with two centre bounce goals in the second quarter and that’s been our issue when we’ve had momentum against us, they’ve been able to get a hold of us at centre bounces and our backs haven’t been able to hold up under that pressure.

“It’s something we’re constantly working on, we feel like when we get it right we look really good but we just need more consistency.”
