Fremantle are aiming to improve their structure around the ground as they look to bounce back against Geelong on Monday night at Optus Stadium, according to Andrew Brayshaw.

Brayshaw said Fremantle only had themselves to blame for a 30-point RAC Derby loss with some defensive lapses allowing West Coast to get on top in the second and third quarters.

Even with Geelong missing star midfielders Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett jnr, Brayshaw said the Cats had the firepower to punish any mistakes.

“(Selwood and Ablett) are big outs for them but they’re a really well drilled team that can take it to anyone. It will be a big challenge for us,” Brayshaw said.

“For us, the team defence is our main one. We’ve seen a lot of footage of us where we’re set up really well and own the corridor really strongly and we hold up as a team in that defence aspect.

“At other times, I guess it’s that consistency piece of being able to hold up through the corridor and force teams wide around us.

“We’ve got to be really strong with our team defence and if we let them through the middle they’ll score. That’s our biggest focus.”

With Geelong going in as favourites, Brayshaw said Fremantle would take confidence from their 34-point win against the eventual minor premiers in round 20 in 2019.

“I do remember that game last year, it was a great win,” Brayshaw said.

“If we can pull something off like that again, it will be really nice. It definitely gives the group confidence that we’ve done it before and, hopefully, we can do it again.”
