SECOND-YEAR midfielder Justin Bollenhagen will play out the remainder of the WAFL season with Swan Districts after having a transfer from Perth cleared this week.
Bollenhagen, who has been restricted to eight games this season because of a knee injury, was not guaranteed senior selection with the Demons for the remaining three games, having played twice at reserves level for the club this season.
The South Adelaide recruit played his second game back from another stint on the sidelines with the Peel Thunder reserves at the weekend, due to Perth's bye, and he will aim to play out the season at senior level with Swan Districts.
Bollenhagen was one of just five Fremantle players involved in round 21 of the state competition, with young midfielders Jesse Crichton (knee) and Jay van Berlo (groin) suffering fresh injuries, and forward Jack Anthony withdrawn late for Subiaco.
Anthony, who suffered a neck injury early in Subiaco's round 20 win over Perth, has since been passed fit.
Ben Bucovaz was the club's WAFL player of the round, continuing a consistent run of form with 17 possessions and four inside 50s for East Fremantle.
The 20-year-old has proven himself at half-back this season, but he has been sent forward recently, with his performances highlighted by a strong work-rate and improved ball-use.
"He's got such good ball-use that he can help set up from half-back, but the fact that he can play forward and back now gives him another string to his bow," assistant coach Simon Lloyd said.
Ahead of this week's clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium, Lloyd shared his WAFL notes with fremantlefc.com.au.
South Fremantle 16.9 (105) d Peel 12.16 (88)
Justin Bollenhagen
Justin played 70 per cent in the midfield for the Peel Thunder reserves and the rest of the match as a high forward. He's just returning from injury and the positive was he got through the four quarters. There were a couple of pieces of play we were pleased with, but we need to see more consistent passages put together. Hopefully that will come this week.
Subiaco 18.12 (120) d East Perth 8.12 (60)
Dylan Roberton
Dylan played as a running back and running forward for East Perth, and his ball-use was generally neat. He defended with real accountability and there was one piece of play where he went back under the ball with a fair bit of commitment, which was pleasing. The thing we need him to focus on is learning to reposition his opponent more often and taking the game on when East Perth wins the footy.
East Fremantle 15.8 (98) d West Perth 11.13 (79)
Jon Griffin
Jon started the game with a couple of classic taps to advantage for East Fremantle, which resulted in good clearances, and his ruck work from then on was good. At times he got caught between play, but he really got going in the second quarter and was sent deep forward, taking a strong contested mark and converting from a very tight angle. He got through the four quarters without any trouble.
Ben Bucovaz
Ben had a great start to the game for East Fremantle, running some really good patterns at half-forward and playing some smart footy. His leading was very good due to his work-rate and timing and there was one standout passage where he had a nice pick-up outside 50 and drilled a low 35m pass onto a teammate's chest. He was involved in some terrific chains in the third quarter and had some quality possessions by hand and foot.
Claremont 21.17 (143) d Swan Districts 14.5 (89)
Byron Schammer
Byron played midfield, wing and high forward for Claremont, continuing his consistent form with a hard-working performance. His ball-use was a highlight, putting teammates into space with his sharp, clean hands, and he ran hard into defence to assist his teammates. He showed good composure, and he seemed to have a lot of time with the ball, finishing with 24 disposals, including five inside 50s.
