Senior Coach Mark Harvey has encouraged all Fremantle members and supporters attending Carlton Mid Derby XXX on Saturday to create a sea of purple at Subiaco Oval.

Since taking the reins at the end of 2007, Harvey’s record against West Coast is unblemished, a statistic that Fremantle fans would like to remain status-quo this weekend.

Harvey’s call to arms comes off the back of this weekend being the AFL’s Rivalry Round.

“I would love to see all Fremantle supporters coming to the game dressed in as much purple as possible to show how proud, loyal and passionate they are and really get behind our team,” Mark said.

“We want to be known as having the most fanatical supporters in the AFL who get right behind their team week in and week out, and they do that, more so when it’s a home game against the Eagles.

“So are we encouraging a full house? Absolutely and that’s what we would all like to see on Saturday.

“The players just hang off their supporters when they are loud and get behind them.”

With Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandiland’s poised to return from injury, the club also plans to unveil its 11th debutant for the season.

Jay van Berlo is on stand-by to make his AFL debut against West Coast after Harvey conceded that Paul Hasleby had pulled up sore after last weekend’s game in heavy conditions against Brisbane.

With another debutant in the mix Harvey also nullified opinion that the derby stage would overawe his younger charges.

“I keep talking to them about rising to the challenge every week and in this particular game I wouldn’t have thought for the younger players it would be any different.”

Harvey also stated that regardless of the external discussions surrounding the two clubs positions on the ladder this season, there was plenty for supporters of both sides to be excited about in this weekend’s clash.

“It’ll be interesting to see how Zac Clarke goes against Nic Naitanui, it’ll be interesting to see how Stephen Hill goes on Chris Masten and that’s where both clubs are at, and we need to focus on these sorts of positives,” he said.

“Also, for us to have local stocks in Broughton, Ballantyne, Pearce and van Berlo, as well as Clarke making their derby debuts, it’s a really exciting time for these players, the supporters and the football club.”

“If the players get caught up in the hype of the derby, that’s ok, it’s probably good for them.”
