Former Fremantle Dockers’ captain and inaugural Doig Medallist Peter Mann has been elected to the club’s board of directors.

Fremantle president Steve Harris announced the results of the club’s ninth annual Member Election tonight at the Annual Members’ Meeting at the Esplanade Hotel.

Mann, 42, who played 77 games for Fremantle and captained the club in 1997 and 1998, will join inaugural club captain and fellow member-elected director Ben Allan on the board when he starts his two-year term on 1 December.

The six-strong field of candidates included Kate Grieve, who was seeking a third term as a member-elected director.

2391 people, or 9.87 per cent of the club’s 24,237 eligible voting members, cast a vote.

The results for the first three candidates were as follows:

1. Peter Mann: 835
2. Chris Lewis: 810
3. Kate Grieve: 410

Mann is a sustainability consultant at water engineering company MWH Global. A former president of the AFL Players Association, he was also the association’s executive director for five seasons from 2000 to 2004.

He has held positions at Macquarie Bank and Boston Consulting and has worked on strategic plans for Cricket Australia, the Fremantle Dockers, the AFL PA, Fosters Brewing and Toyota’s AFL sponsorship.

Mann said he was proud to have the opportunity to represent members on the board of the Fremantle Dockers.

“Given the skills and experience I’ve had both on-field and off-field in playing, administration and strategic development, I believe I can add value,” he said.

“I also wanted to give something back to the Fremantle Football Club, which gave me the opportunity to play a long time ago.

“I made a conscious decision to come back to Fremantle to be a part of the inaugural team and that’s something I’m very proud to have been a part of.

“Now, I’m excited and enthused to join the club again as a member of the board.”

Harris said that the combination of Mann’s football background and commercial expertise would further enhance the club’s already well-credentialed board.

“Peter’s experience as a player and his business expertise will be welcomed and we look forward to working with him in his first two-year term,” Harris said.

“It was a very strong field and I thank the other five candidates for the time and effort they committed to this important aspect of the club’s governance.

“On behalf of the board I also take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank outgoing director Kate Grieve for her contribution to the club.

“Kate served two terms as a member-elected director and during that time made a valuable contribution to the direction of the club, including representing members’ interests on a number of important sub-committees and membership initiatives.”

Mann will join president Steve Harris, vice-president Ben Allan and fellow directors Dale Alcock, Grant Donaldson, Jenn Morris, Brian O’Donnell and Stephen O’Reilly at his first board meeting next month.
