Viv hits pre-season on the right foot
After two years on the sidelines, Viv Michie is loving pre-season training
That's because the 20-year-old has hardly made an appearance on the training track since being drafted with pick 44 in the 2010 National Draft.
Stress fractures in his right foot, sustained early in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons, are to blame for that.
But after completing a second long-term rehab program, Michie hasn't missed a beat this pre-season, joining in all activities from day one.
"It's been a bit of a change from the past couple of years," Michie said.
"It's just great to be out there, particularly to start off the pre-season. I'm getting through well so far."
Michie said every kilometre run and every football kicked has helped him grow surer in his foot's ability to hold up.
"I'm starting to get more confidence in the foot, it's holding up perfectly well at the moment," he said.
But Michie said the rest of his body has begun to "feel it a little" adjusting to full training again.
"Fitness is the one thing that's going to take a little bit more time," he said.
"What the fitness staff have told me is to just focus on getting through football training first, and the fitness will take care of itself and gradually improve as the pre-season goes on.
"I'm pretty confident I'll be right."
Michie has been able to take a positive out of being unable to run for so long.
"My strength has gone up a hell of a lot," he said.
"I've been spending so much time in the gym the past couple of years.
"That's something I can take out of having so much time off, I'm more physically developed."
And Michie, who is entering the last year of his contract extension, won't be spending any time worrying about injuring his foot again.
"I'm pretty positive," he said.
"I can't afford to think too much about it.
"I'm just enjoying being out there."
