We look at the club's forwards next:
Nathan Fyfe
Position: Forward/Mid
Price: $486,600
2011 Average: 98.4
Career Average: 85.5
Verdict: This gun should be the first Freo player picked in your Dream Team. He can score points on the ground and in the air, all over the park. 'Fyfey' is good enough to be considered as a straight-up midfielder, so don't miss the chance to have him in your forward line. You won't be disappointed.
Matthew Pavlich
Position: Forward/Mid
Price: $466,200
2011 Average: 94.3
Career Average: 86.9
Verdict: Freo's captain has been as reliable as they come in Dream Team for many seasons now. He looks like returning to attack in 2012, which means he won't get as many possessions as he did in the midfield in 2011, but he will score more nine-pointers. 'Pav' is looking super-fit, too, and looks a great option, especially considering his dual position status.
Hayden Ballantyne
Position: Forward
Price: $356,700
2011 Average: 72.1
Career Average: 67.8
Verdict: The little man could be the big improver in Dream Team this season thanks to a new midfield role that will put him right at the heart of all the action. He was a prolific scorer in the team's intra-club match and first NAB Cup game. The only downside is he does not come cheap at $356,700. Could be a keeper.
Chris Mayne
Position: Forward
Price: $326,700
2011 Average: 66
Career Average: 62
Verdict: Mayne has scored steadily around the 60 points per game mark throughout his four years in the AFL. They are not numbers to make him a priority for your team unless you're willing to gamble that he will have a breakout season in 2012.
Kepler Bradley
Position: Forward
Price: $314,300
2011 Average: 63.5
Career Average: 60.6
Verdict: Kepler is favourite among the Freo faithful, but he's not as popular in Dream Team with a career average of 60.6. He did score 78.6 a game in 2010 when he played as a key forward.
Clancee Pearce
Position: Forward/Mid
Price: $305,000
2011 Average: 61.7
Career Average: 58.8
Verdict: Pearce has had a tremendous pre-season which has drawn the admiration of his senior coach. The only issue in Dream Team is that he is rookie listed, which makes him a no-go at the $305,000 asking price. Keep an eye on him if he gets elevated onto the senior list.
Adam McPhee
Position: Forward
Price: $274,900
2011 Average: 55.6
Career Average: 71
Verdict: McPhee is no longer the Dream Team star he was in the mid noughties when he averaged in the high 80s. At $274,900, he is not priced well enough for you to consider him as a DT smoky.
Jack Anthony
Position: Forward
Price: $178,100
2011 Average: 36
Career Average: 56.5
Verdict: Anthony has never been a big Dream Team scorer. The upside for him is that it looks like he’ll be given opportunities and, at just $178,100, there’s no real risk in giving him a go.
Josh Mellington
Position: Forward
Price: $148,400
2011 Average: 37.5
Career Average: 37.5
Verdict: Mellington looks like being a strong contender for a spot in the senior team in 2012. At just $148,400, this makes him a great unique choice for your Dream Team.
Viv Michie
Position: Forward
Price: $104,200
2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A
Verdict: Injury prevented Michie from playing a game in his first AFL season in 2011. That means he’s still priced as a first-year player. As he’s had an interrupted pre-season, the advice on Michie would be to wait and see if he gets a game later in the season, when you’re looking to downgrade your cash-cows.
Gavin Roberts
Position: Forward
Price: $104,200
2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A
Verdict: The athletically gifted Roberts couldn’t get out on the park in 2011 because of injury. As is the case with most untried rookies, wait for signs of life before jumping on board.
Hayden Crozier
Position: Forward/Mid
Price: $98,700
2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A
Verdict: Ross Lyon has praised the ability of Freo’s second pick from the 2011 AFL National Draft, but he’s also indicated that the club is mindful of his light frame and probably won’t throw him into the action straight away.
Sam Menegola
Position: Forward
Price: $98,700
2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A
Verdict: Menegola is a running machine, which augurs well for Dream Team scoring. He also had prior experience at an AFL club, spending the 2011 season at Hawthorn. The only downside is that, as a rookie listed player, he will have to fight for a spot on the senior list. Keep a close eye on him.
Haiden Schloithe
Position: Forward/Mid
Price: $85,800
2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A
Verdict: Schloithe was a prolific tackler at WAFL colts level but, as a rookie listed player, it’s unlikely he’ll feature early on in Freo’s senior team. Keep an eye on him as the season progresses.
Defenders
Michael Johnson
Position: Defence/Forward
Price: $319,500
2011 Average: 64.6
Career Average: 67.2
Verdict: Johnson's career Dream Team average has always hovered in the 60-75 point mark. A 126 in the last game of 2011 showed he has the ability to score, and with a new coach he may be worth a go, especially considering the value he gives as a dual position player.
Alex Silvagni
Position: Defence
Price: $304,500
2011 Average: 61.6
Career Average: 59.4
Verdict: Silvagni is a solid defender who excels at the one-percenters. Unfortunately, that doesn't count for much in Dream Team which makes 'SOS' an unattractive buy at $304,500.
Antoni Grover
Position: Defence
Price: $244,600
2011 Average: 49.5
Career Average: 53.1
Verdict: Much like Silvagni, Grover will always do his bit for the team in defence. But he won't do much for your Dream Team so pass on him.
Dylan Roberton
Position: Defence
Price: $221,500
2011 Average: 44.8
Career Average: 52.9
Verdict: Roberton fell almost 17 points per game from his debut 2010 season average last year. He has displayed an ability to find the ball and could be a cheap option for you if he can win a regular spot in the team. Wait to see what role he plays in the NAB Cup.
Jesse Crichton
Position: Defence
Price: $191,500
2011 Average: 38.7
Career Average: 44.1
Verdict: The Tasmanian was another to take a backwards step in 2011 Dream Team scoring from his debut season in 2010. He is an AIS/AFL Academy graduate and, if he starts to find his feet in the league, 'Crichto' could be a steal at $191,500.
Zac Dawson
Position: Defence
Price: $188,500
2011 Average: 39.2 (St KIlda)
Career Average: 43.4 (St Kilda)
Verdict: The former Saint has a career average of just 43.4 from 77 matches. He's a solid defender but not a Dream Teamer.
Peter Faulks
Position: Defence
Price: $153,300
2011 Average: 31
Career Average: 31
Verdict: Just an average of 31 points from his two matches in 2011 does not augur well for Dream Team. It's a no for 'Faulksy'.
Alex Forster
Position: Defence
Price: $98,700
First year player
Verdict: He averaged 15.4 disposals and five marks per game in the 18s carnival last year. As is with most untried players at this level when it comes to Dream Team, wait and see before jumping on board.
Jordan Wilson-King
Position: Defence
Price: $85,800
First year player - Rookie Listed
Verdict: Wilson-King is a hard-at-it attacking defender from the Northern Territory. He will have to gain promotion from the rookie list to become a Dream Team factor but Fremantle has a good record with rookies in the past few seasons.
Lee Spurr
Position: Defence
Price: $107,800
First year player - Rookie Listed
Verdict: The mature-age recruit will be very popular among Dream Team coaches given Fremantle's record with the likes of Mick Barlow, Nick Lower, Greg Broughton and Alex Silvagni off the rookie list. He's played lots of senior footy in SA, too, so he could be good pick.
Greg Broughton
Position: Defence
Price: $416,200
2011 Average: 84.1
Career Average: 87.3
Verdict: Freo’s most expensive player but he’s worth it. Is often the avenue his teammates will look for coming out of the backline, which means he picks up the easy Dream Team points. But Broughton has also proved he can move into the midfield and get down and dirty in the packs, as he did last year when injuries saw him swung onto the ball. He responded with some massive scores. There’s plenty of talent returning to the Freo engine room this year, however, which means 'Broughts' may have to score your points mainly as a defender.
Paul Duffield
Position: Defence
Price: $347,200
2011 Average: 70.2
Career Average: 77
Verdict: 'Duff' disappointed in 2011, dropping a whopping 18.5 points per game from his 2010 average. But a new coach and game plan could see him return to his points-scoring best. He’s also dropped a bit in price, so if you are the risk-reward sort of Dream Team coach, 'Duff' could be a goer in 2012.
Nick Suban
Position: Defence
Price: $272,100
2011 Average: 55
Career Average: 55.6
Verdict: 'Subes' is the hot tip from Freo. Ignore his career average and lowly output in 2011. Before injury in round 4 last year caused him to miss 11 matches, Suban had started the season in fine touch. He scored just under 100 in his first three games and was starting to look comfortable on the half-back line. He’s nicely priced at $272,100, which won’t break your bank and reward you greatly if 'Subes' builds on his undoubted potential.
Jayden Pitt
Position: Defence
Price: $236,200
2011 Average: 47.8
Career Average: 47.8
Verdict: Pitt had a solid debut season in 2011 and will look to build on his average of 47.8. He played a couple of nice Dream Team games in his eight appearances, including an 87 in round 4. Pitt has also put on a bit of weight, which augurs well for the season ahead, but the smart money would wait to see how he performs before jumping on board at $236,200.
Garrick Ibbotson
Position: Defence
Price: $339,700
2011 Average: 68.7
Career Average: 67.1
Verdict: Ibbotson has all the tools to be a big Dream Team scorer. He’s fast and strong and has elite endurance. Injuries have prevented him from really exploding, but, entering his sixth season, is at that stage of a career when many players enjoy breakout Dream Team seasons. 'Ibbo' has shown glimpses in the past and 2012 could be a big year for him and your Dream Team if you take the chance.
Luke McPharlin
Position: Defence
Price: $315,300
2011 Average: 63.8
Career Average: 63.1
Verdict: You know what you’re going to get with McPharlin. He’s always averaged somewhere between 60-70 Dream Team points per game throughout his long career. 'Luke Mc' is a tremendous defender, but this won’t help your Dream Team. Pass on him, especially considering the $315,300 price tag.
