Following what he described as an “enormous” game of footy against reigning Premiers Geelong, Ross Lyon says it’s all about improvement.

Freo upset the Cats by four points on Saturday night, giving Lyon a dream start to his tenure as the club’s senior coach.

But Lyon said a “red-hot” set of fixtures to come in the next month meant Freo had to continue improving.

“We’ve got an incredibly tough start to the year,” he said.

“Sydney in Sydney and I watched Brisbane, who are in good form.

“We’ve got the Saints on a Friday night and then Carlton.”

One area the Freo coach pin-pointed for enhancement was clearances, an area Geelong enjoyed a dominant 20-10 advantage in at the round 1 game.

“Centre bounces kept Geelong in,” he said.

Lyon said Freo also turned the ball over too often for his liking and went to sleep for periods of the game, especially in the second quarter.

"I thought we had some really poor turnovers where we could have entered long and deep to one-on-ones and we were cute with the ball," he said.

"And I thought, when we were going forward, people behind the ball who had no influence on the play were just sitting there. They may as well have got a packet of popcorn out and started eating because they weren't on anyone."

Ultimately, Lyon was just happy to get the win against the Cats and garner some confidence to attack the next month of footy with.

“To bank four points and get some belief and momentum to take interstate is really important for a group that’s worked incredibly hard over summer,” he said.

“There was a lot to like and some areas to work on, but we’ll lick our wounds and review it, present that and train.

“That’s how we work.”
