FREMANTLE'S David Mundy says Sunday's heavy loss to Melbourne was a bitter pill to swallow, but maintains his side is determined to finish a disappointing season strongly.

"We just really want to try and set ourselves to go out on a high," Mundy said after Fremantle's 63-point defeat at the MCG on Sunday.

"We've just got to get back on the horse. We've only got two games left now, and one of those is at home.

"It's been a tough year for our supporters, but (in) our last game at home, we want to give them a decent farewell and give them something to look forward to over a long summer."

There was no sign of the coming landslide in an even first quarter on Sunday, but Mundy cited poor skill execution and decision-making errors as the main factors in the defeat.

"I think we over-possessed the ball early, especially by hand, which got us into trouble," he said.

"That and our kicking inaccuracy were what mainly hurt us and put us behind the eight ball a bit. Then the game slipped away from us after quarter-time, which was really disappointing.

"Unfortunately for us, they played quite well. It was built up as a big day for them and Jim Stynes was here as well, so it was an emotional day.

"Credit to them, they came out and really served it up to us, but we need to be able to match that sort of intensity."

Sunday's lacklustre performance was particularly disappointing after Fremantle dominated against Port Adelaide just a week earlier. Mundy said the inconsistency of the side would be a major focus in the coming months.

"It's always harder to play away from home, but that fluctuation in performance from week to week or ground to ground are the ones that we want to get rid of," he said.

Fremantle hosts the Bombers at Subiaco next Sunday, and finishes its 2009 campaign with a daunting road trip to take on the Cats at Skilled Stadium in round 22.
