CLAYTON Hinkley's season has come to an abrupt end this week, and it probably won’t come as much of a consolation to the 20-year-old that he finished the year as Fremantle's in-form WAFL player.

Hinkley, who will have surgery on Friday for a shoulder that has troubled him since Fremantle's round 15 loss to Adelaide, was development coach Steve Malaxos' WAFL player of the week and may have been in line for an AFL recall with Hayden Ballantyne suspended.

The midfield speedster split his time between the WAFL and AFL this season managing eight games with Fremantle and six with Swan Districts.

His final game for the year was spent in an unfamiliar and old-fashioned centreman's role, where Malaxos said he impressed.

"That was quite different for him and it was really good to see him playing that role," he said.

"We've been pushing it, but they (Swan Districts) haven't felt totally comfortable with it, other than for brief periods.

"This time they gave him a full on crack and he delivered, which was good."

Malaxos said stoppage work, winning contested possessions and tackling had been Hinkley's main focuses this season and he was on track to play either onball or as a high half-forward for Fremantle.

Elevated rookie Luke Pratt was another eye-catcher in the WAFL in round 19 after a mixed month.

"He's been a little bit disjointed – he's only played two games in the last five weeks," Malaxos said of the 19-year-old.

"He's had an injury, a bye and one stint as a travelling emergency, so it hasn't been the best block of the year for him because he's only played two games."

Malaxos said Pratt could come into the Fremantle side in the last four rounds if the club decides to rest some of its younger players.

Meanwhile, first-year trio Ben Bucovaz, Casey Sibosado and Chris Hall have all but been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Malaxos said it was highly unlikely any would play again in 2009 as the club takes a very conservative approach with their ongoing groin complaints.

Ahead of Thursday's selection Malaxos shared his WAFL notes with fremantlefc.com.au.

Clayton Hinkley
Played quite well for Swan Districts. He was opposed to Luke Blackwell and played an old-fashioned centre position most of the day. He impressed in that role, finishing with 22 possessions, five or six clearances and five inside 50s. He also tackled really well, so we were quite pleased.

Luke Pratt
He played in defence on Ian Richardson, who really pushed up the ground a lot, and did a good job for most of the day for Swans. He went onball for 10-15 minutes and used the ball well in both roles. Luke plays on those types of forwards most weeks, but we're trying to see what he can do in other roles. He's still primarily viewed as a small defender.

Daniel Gilmore
Played on the wing all day at Anniversary Park and played pretty well, particularly in the first half where his running was quite decisive. He used the ball better and played a pretty good game in a Bulldogs side that had a comfortable win.

Josh Head
Just a reasonable game from Josh. He started on the wing and played in defence thereafter. He didn’t have a lot to do down back and finished with nine possessions for Souths. We'll be looking for Josh to do more of the hard stuff.

Adam Campbell
He played quite well in a West Perth side that had some forwards on fire. Jack Darling kicked six for them and they've got Brent LeCras as well, but Adam still got involved and he finished with two goals. He played a good role and he took some good contested marks.

'Drummy' played a pretty solid game. He played in defence on Blake Broadhurst mainly. He didn’t get a lot of possessions, but defensively he did very well and his disposal was very efficient. He's definitely picked up a little bit in the last couple of weeks with his spark and enthusiasm. He's picked up at training and his form at WAFL level has been reasonably good. I think he's on the right track now and could get a call up for Fremantle pretty soon.
