Day four of the ‘Live the Dream’ program, which is proudly supported by BHP Billiton Iron Ore, started early for the 16 lucky participants.
An early morning wake up call saw the group kick off their day at Fremantle Oval with a 7:15am circuit class at ‘Spring into Fitness’ with Gary Ingraham.
The 45-minute circuit included free weights, lat pull downs, treadmills, bikes, rowers, bench press and the Smiths machines which got the group working up a sweat before the sun had fully risen.
After their buffet breakfast, the participants returned to the club to undertake media training with the Communications Department, lead by General Manager Communications Luke Morfesse. This outlined Fremantle’s media responsibilities, its weekly media schedule and the value of the club’s multimedia channel on fremantlefc.com.au – FTV.
The ‘Live the Dreamers’ were encouraged to find potential angles for news stories that arose in the days following Fremantle’s Round 15 clash against Adelaide and contrasted their ideas with what the major news outlets reported during the week.
The session concluded with a series of role-play activities activities where the ‘Live the Dreamers’ became journalists and AFL players under media pressure. They took it in turns asking questions of each other and offering responses as though they were addressing the press at a press conference.
Club Dietician Sophy Porter then took the group for a session on nutrition. She detailed her role within the club and explained how the foods the playing group eat are tailored specifically to meet their dietary and performance requirements.
After lunch, the ‘Live the Dreamers’ undertook a Non-Verbal Communication and behaviours session with Janny O’Connell from Notre Dame University before they assisted the Community Development Program staff with the finals of the Skills for Schools on Fremantle Oval.
The day ended with dinner at La Porchettas in Fremantle before they endured the frightening twilight tour of Fremantle Prison.
The BHP Billiton Iron Ore Live the Dream program is designed to develop teamwork and leadership skills, develop problem solving skills under pressure, provide participants with experiences that take them outside of their comfort zone and develop skills that participants can take back to their local community and pass onto their peers.
The 16 lucky participants were selected from a large range of nominations by a panel consisting of Fremantle Football Club staff and BHP Billiton Iron Ore staff. Nominations were sought through BHP Billiton Iron Ore, junior football clubs, the City of Fremantle, the Welcome to the AFL program, or from Eastern States Partner Clubs of the Fremantle Football Club.
