The latest instalment of Chris Mayne’s special summer series, ‘The Mayne Minutes’ sees new recruit Joel Houghton put under the spotlight.
Houghton was selected by Fremantle with pick 36 in the 2009 AFL Draft after having played colts for Perth last season in the WAFL, which also saw him earn himself a spot in the under-18s State side.
Houghton tells ‘The Mayne Minutes’ about his memories of his draft day experience, which was also his 18th birthday and unexpectedly saw him remain in Western Australia.
“I had no expectations on draft day, so to stay in WA, what more could you ask for?” said Houghton.
“It was a pretty good birthday present!”
Houghton also reveals to ‘The Mayne Minutes’ which senior players have taken him under their wing to help him adapt to life as a professional footballer, what he has had to change in his diet since joining Fremantle and also his transition from a basketball scholarship holder to picking up Australian rules footy.
