Justin Longmuir’s first genuine ‘home’ game as Fremantle’s senior coach could be in front of a packed Optus Stadium of 60,000 fans when the RAC Derby is held in round seven.

Longmuir said the fixture would be a boost for WA football, and especially for Fremantle, as a home game that allows priority access to 2020 members.

“It will be great for our footy club to be able to get our first real home game for the year, the fact that there’s going to be 60,000 people there is an added bonus that we probably didn’t expect,” Longmuir said.

While Fremantle have embraced their hub on the Gold Coast, Longmuir said the players were happy to have an end date in sight, with Freo returning to WA following their round six clash with Melbourne at Metricon Stadium on Saturday 11 July.

“I’m excited to get home,” Longmuir said.

“We’ve enjoyed our time here. All along we’ve said we’re willing to stay four to six weeks and we’ll embrace it.

“Just to get that clarity of when we’re going home and how the quarantine works and who we’ll be playing next is great for the families back home. It’s really settled them and it’s great for our players.”

Longmuir said Fremantle’s 14-day quarantine period following their return to WA would be as close to business as usual.

“Our understanding is we’ll get an allotted time we are allowed at the club,” Longmuir said.

“We’ll have to make the most of that time because outside of being at the club, we’re going to have to be at our homes locked away. 

“We’ve got to make the most of being at the club and make the most of our training and hours with the players. That’s not a lot different to usual though.

“We don’t like having the players around the club for the sake of being around the club. 

“The guidelines will be adequate for us to get the right amount of training and meetings into our players.”
