Four-goal Fyfe wants more inside 50s
Despite a win, Nat Fyfe says 33 inside 50s won’t cut it against the best
A 22-point win over Adelaide at Patersons Stadium was accomplished with just 33 forays inside the attacking arcs – an AFL equal record for fewest entries to win a game.
Fyfe said the greasy conditions had played a part, but the team knew it had to do more to give its forwards more opportunities.
“It was hard to get it forward but we know we need to get it in more than that,” he said.
“Obviously, to capitalise on it like we did was a good result, but our midfielders need to get the ball in more than that and get it in deeper as well and give our small forwards an opportunity.”
Fyfe was best on ground in the win, with 29 disposals, nine marks and four goals – the most he’s ever kicked in an AFL game since his debut in 2010.
He said it was pleasing to get back on the winner’s list after a disappointing loss to Richmond last week, but added the side had plenty to work on.
“I think the last few weeks we’ve been down a little bit, both on effort and a bit structurally, so there’s a few things we still need to tidy up,” he said.
One area of concern was the lackluster starts in the first and third quarters against the Crows.
“It was a focus for us to start strong, but in the first and third quarters they got the jump on us,” Fyfe said.
“That had a little bit to do with the centre clearances as well, they are both areas we will look at and look to improve going forward.”
Fyfe said a desperate Carlton side would present Fremantle with a “huge challenge” at Etihad Stadium next Saturday night.
“I watched them today and they were pretty impressive, so we are looking forward to getting over and tackling them.”
