Three of the changes were injury related with Nick Suban omitted due to hamstring soreness, Stephen Hill (hamstring soreness) and Michael Walters (knee).

But given that week one of the club’s finals’ campaign is most likely to see the team make consecutive away trips to Melbourne it was no surprise that senior coach Ross Lyon and his match committee opted to - given the travel burden - rest seven of Freo’s regular 22, including David Mundy, Nat Fyfe, Hayden Ballantyne, Michael Johnson, Zac Dawson, Zac Clarke and Lee Spurr.
Four of the 10 additions to the squad include senior players Aaron Sandilands, Garrick Ibbotson, Clancee Pearce and Alex Silvagni.
They are joined by Hayden Crozier, Jesse Crichton, Peter Faulks, Josh Mellington, Matt Taberner and debutant Alex Forster.
Lyon said the changes to the team that beat Port Adelaide last Saturday at Patersons Stadium by 74 points would give players the best opportunity to perform at their highest level in September.
Ross Lyon has pulled a similar move before. As coach of St Kilda, Lyon made seven changes in round 19, 2009, for a trip to Launceston to face Hawthorn.
On that occasion Lyon left out Lenny Hayes, Steven Baker, Leigh Montagna, Nick Riewoldt, Michael Gardiner, Sam Fisher and Nick dal Santo for the trip to Launceston and the Saints still beat the Hawks by 25 points.
"I have experienced this before at St Kilda and we went down and won the game, so that's still the aim here," Lyon said.
Lyon did not think making 10 changes should be viewed as suspicious.
"If that's viewed as sinister, then we all look through the world with different eyes and different circumstances.
"But it's a considered view and we'll be very, very competitive. To our members and fans you'll see a team that gives great effort and will be very, very competitive.
"We're going over to get the points."
Amid the carnage at the selection table Luke McPharlin will miss an eighth consecutive match and Lyon will be forced into picking the All Australia defender first up in a final.
"It's not ideal," Lyon said.
"He trained exceptionally well today and barring a hiccup he'll be available for selection in the first final.
"But in saying that it's a really important decision."
