The Carlton Mid Derby specialist

Paul Hasleby’s record of four Ross Glendinning Medals in Derbies is under serious threat after Michael Barlow took out his second best-on-ground award against West Coast this season. The hard working midfielder’s 26-disposal, two-goal effort just pipped teammates Nat Fyfe and Chris Mayne on Sunday. Barlow also won the Glendinning Medal in his first Derby back in round 6, 2010, meaning he has received the honour in three of his six matches against the Eagles.

Mayne the team player

Much like the Brownlow, the Glendinning Medal is an award most often awarded to midfielders or forwards who kick a bag (see Pav’s eight in 2012). But a man whose efforts on Sunday were surpassed by none was the irrepressible Chris Mayne. His ability to repeatedly pressure Eagle opponents from go-to-whoa was stunning. Mayne finished the game with nine tackles and countless pressure acts that constantly altered the direction of West Coast kicks. He added 21 disposals, six marks and three goals and could be considered very stiff not to have won best-on-ground honours. That won’t bother ‘Mayney’ one bit, however. The 2012 Players’ Award winner is the ultimate team player.

The king of the kids

Mayne is also great with kids, as the Docker 4 a Day child, Calder Lea, found out when running through the banner with the team on Sunday. Young Calder, whose family secured him the honour at this year’s Gala Auction, tripped over and fell to the ground. ‘Mayney’ stopped, picked him up, brushed the grass off his jumper and then ran side-by-side with him until they caught up to the group. Well done ‘Mayney’!

Pavlich rubbed out

The AFL Match Review Panel has handed Matthew Pavlich a four-game suspension, which can be reduced to three with an early plea, for a third-quarter incident in Sunday’s Carlton Mid Derby involving West Coast’s Mitch Brown. Freo has until Tuesday 9.00am (WST) to decide if it will appeal.

The other incident on Clancee

The other report from Sunday’s game was on West Coast’s Andrew Embley for this hit that saw Clancee Pearce subbed out of the game with concussion.

Fyfe turns into the invisible man

Midway through the final quarter, Nat Fyfe was hovering inside 50 as Freo were chipping the ball outside the arc, looking for a pass. While his opponent had initially manned Fyfe up, the brilliant midfielder appeared to turn into the invisible man when West Coast defender Mitch Brown left him alone. Fyfe waved his arms in the air for 10 seconds to signify his availability to his teammates. Lee Spurr eventually found the free Freo Docker 40m out from the big sticks and Fyfe made no mistake with the set-shot.

Two Derbies, same margin

For the second time this season, Fremantle beat the Eagles by 28 points. It was in similar fashion to the round 1 triumph after West Coast had taken the game up to Ross Lyon’s side, only to be overrun.

Freo’s defence squeezes the Eagles again

West Coast has failed to register 100 points against Fremantle in the past 13 Carlton Mid Derbies. The last time the Eagles scored triple figures against us was in round 3, 2007.

Hill celebrates game 100
Stephen Hill’s day began with his mother presenting him with his derby jumper in the rooms and close family friend and former teammate Antoni Grover giving a speech about him in front of the players. It ended with two goals, including a trademark shot on the run, and a Powerade shower.

Ibbo’s golden fist

Garrick Ibbotson’s tremendous form revival gathers momentum. So good has his form been since returning to the side in round 5 this season,’Ibbo’ has to be in the All Australian conversation. He is averaging 23 disposals and nine marks a game, but it’s his defensive work that has really impressed. Check out this goal-saving spoil in the first quarter of the Carlton Mid Derby.
