Matthew Pavlich has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of his brother.

In an interview on ABC Radio’s Who are you, the Fremantle captain revealed how his parents, Steve and Jan, shockingly lost Jason at birth after what had been a normal pregnancy.

Pavlich, 31, became a father in March when his wife Lauren gave birth to daughter, Harper Rose.

He said that experience helped him better comprehend his parents’ loss and realise just how much they loved him.

"I knew my mum and dad loved me, but it wasn't until three or four hours after Harper was born and I was like, wow, look at this little girl Lauren and I have made, that I realised your mum and dad seriously love you,” Pavlich said.

"And it was that appreciation when she was born, and taking her through Jason's experience and what (my parents) had to deal with, the appreciation levels went through the roof."
