Fremantle key defender Alex Silvagni is hoping an ability to play on smalls as well as talls can help him break into the side this year.

Silvagni debuted in 2010 and played 24 games in his first two seasons, but he only appeared in five games last year.

Senior coach Ross Lyon preferred to go with Zac Dawson and Luke McPharlin as the side’s key defenders, although a hamstring injury to the latter on the eve of the finals saw Silvagni play two games in September.

He held Geelong forward James Podsiadly goalless in Freo’s memorable Elimination Final win.

The 25-year-old Victorian has been working diligently on his running ability to allow him to go with small forwards aswell as cover the keys.

“If you can play on smalls and play on talls, it’s another string to add to your bow and (offers) versatility in the backline,” Silvagni said.

“If I can do that, it maybe opens up a spot for me in the backline, which is the ultimate goal at the end of the day.”

Adam McPhee’s retirement at the end of last season has created a gap that needs to be filled in the Fremantle defence.

Silvagni hoped completing a full pre-season for the first time since he arrived at the club has him well placed to make a run for that spot.

“It’s instilled a lot of confidence in me because I’ve been able to get through a full pre-season,” he said.

“In previous years I’ve had some injuries along the way, with calf injuries and groin injuries.”

Silvagni won’t be available for Freo’s opening game of the home and away season against West Coast at Patersons Stadium after he was suspended in the Semi-final defeat to Adelaide last season.
