Taberner’s take on Team Freo
In his first year on an AFL list Matt Taberner is learning about more than just footy
He is part of Team Freo, a community goals program run and co-ordinated by the club’s first year players, who conduct football clinics for school aged children.
The 20-year-old said being part of Team Freo has helped him develop his communication skills.
“It’s good to get out and teach the kids footy skills,” Taberner said.
“They get out of school for a bit, so they enjoy it, but it’s also good for us first year players to interact with the community.
“Having to give the kids a clear instruction and giving them feedback has helped me with my communication skills.”
The tall forward was selected in the 2012 Rookie Draft, and was moved onto the senior list in round 13 when he debuted against North Melbourne at Patersons Stadium.
“Obviously playing football is our number one aim, but the club is keen for us to have something outside of football,” Taberner said.
“Coming down on a Monday with the rest of the first years is good.
“We get to break away from footy for a bit and just concentrate on making sure the kids have a good time.”
