Fremantle fans will soon be able to return to Optus Stadium as part of the WA government’s latest changes to the state’s COVID-19 restrictions. 

WA Premier Mark McGowan announced the changes on Monday afternoon as part of Phase 4, which will come into effect from Saturday June 27.

Major sporting and entertainment venues such as Optus Stadium will be permitted to operate at 50 per cent capacity, clearing the way for up to 30,000 spectators at AFL fixtures.

The Premier also slated July 18 for further COVID-19 restrictions to be eased, with the implementation of Phase 5.

Under this phase, Optus Stadium will be able to accommodate its full capacity of 60,000 spectators for events.

“All things going well, Phase 5 will mean removal of the 2sqm rule across our state,” McGowan said.

“We will also remove all other gathering restrictions and the 50 per cent capacity rule for major events.

“That means under Phase 5 our major venues can accommodate full capacity and all kinds of major events can take place.”

AFL.com.au is reporting that these changes could mean Fremantle can host as many as 30,000 supporters at AFL games upon return from the Gold Coast hub on July 5th, before reaching the full 60,000 capacity of Optus Stadium from round seven.

Phase Six is the re-opening of WA’s borders with the eastern states.
