Freo won't forget loss
Sub-standard effort against Hawks must be a lesson, says Lee Spurr
Fremantle were trounced by 58 points in the Grand Final rematch last Friday night. It was the club's sixth consecutive loss to Hawthorn and they have lost nine of their last 10 matches against the Hawks dating back to 2008.
"Our effort wasn't good enough and we need to give better effort," Spurr said.
"It wasn't up to standard and it shows that if you're a little bit off in this competition you get beaten pretty badly.
"We're going to review it, and go through it, and learn from it and grow and move forward.
"You can't just sweep it under the carpet. We need to have a hard look at why that happened and we need to make sure it doesn't happen again."
The task does not get any easier for the Dockers this week as they face Essendon in a blockbuster clash on Sunday afternoon at Patersons Stadium.
The Bombers were the only side to beat Fremantle in Perth last season, stunning the Dockers in round four with a four-point win after trailing by six goals at half-time.
The Dockers have not beaten Essendon under Ross Lyon and Spurr believes the Bombers are the equal of Hawthorn at present.
"Hawthorn are red-hot. They're the benchmark of the competition and so are Essendon," Spurr said.
"They're both flying. We've got a strong test ahead of us."
Fremantle's task is made even tougher by a mounting injury toll. Michael Barlow is already missing with a knee problem and Nat Fyfe has another week to serve on his suspension.
Michael Walters will be absent due to a dislocated tendon in his left ankle that may require surgery. It is the same ankle that he injured in round eight last season that saw him miss three matches.
Chris Mayne will need to pass a fitness test later in the week after injuring his ankle last Friday night.
Garrick Ibbotson has been ruled out for two to four weeks after dislocating his shoulder in the first quarter against the Hawks. It is a cruel blow for Ibbotson who missed last year's finals series due to an Achilles injury.
