David Mundy says Fremantle brought good effort but did not execute well in Friday night’s Len Hall Tribute Game loss to North Melbourne at Patersons Stadium.

The Kangaroos finished too strongly to record a 13-point win despite Fremantle winning most of the key performance indicators.

The home side enjoyed a 42-34 advantage in the clearances and had 10 more inside 50s, but Mundy said skill let the team down.

“We won a lot of key stats and we thought our effort was really good,” he said.

“We won the ball really well (but) we were just a bit sloppy with a bit of execution.

“A few of our mechanics broke down as the game wore on, so the Kangaroos were really able to expose us.”

Fremantle had not tasted defeat at Patersons Stadium in more than a year, with the last home loss coming against Essendon in round 3, 2013.

Mundy said the team prided itself on playing well everywhere, but he admitted it was always disappointing to lose in front of the Freo fans.
“To lose anywhere is a bitter pill to swallow, but especially at home where all our fans come out,” he said.

The star midfielder had 27 possessions and a goal to be one of Freo’s best.

He also dismissed suggestions the back-to-back six-day breaks leading into the North Melbourne game played a part in the loss.

“We’re full-time athletes now and we put a lot of time into recovery after games, and especially on six-day breaks,” he said.

“I think to use that as an excuse is a bit of a cop-out.”

The team now turns its focus towards recovery and a Carlton Draught Derby clash with West Coast next Sunday.

Mundy was well aware of the importance of the Patersons Stadium clash.

“We don’t want to lose too many games in a row,” he said.

“We’ve put ourselves into a bit of a hole early in the season now at 3-3, so the boys will be fighting hard to get right back.”
