Freo president Steve Harris has only one expectation
Fremantle president Steve Harris has given a rousing speech at the club’s Season Launch breakfast on Thursday
With more than 850 faithful Freo supporters in attendance, Harris offered some inspiring words at the start of the club's 2014 Season Launch breakfast.
He spoke of the 20th season celebrating a “unique culture” at Fremantle, one that was founded from an independent spirit and an independent ethos.
Harris told the crowd they should be proud of what the club has achieved so far in its existence, and of its strong position in the current AFL climate.
“At a time when club financial equalisation, subsidies and handouts are topical in the AFL and in business, we can be proud of a club that was established in hardship and a club which has grown to become strong, independent and in control of its own destiny through the efforts and passion of the people who want the Fremantle Football Club to be successful and to experience sustained success,” he said.
“This heritage is part of our culture and part of the resilience that defines the club, the people who work and play at the club and our supporters.”
Harris confirmed that Freo would be recognising its 20th season in a number of ways in 2014, including a book reviewing the club’s history, a 20-year Gala Dinner on 1 August, and a jumper that will be worn in round 17 against GWS containing the name of every single player who has played for the club.
The Freo president also reminded supporters that history could not be used as a predictor of future success.
“It’s our commitment and work ethic, on and off the field, from every individual that will dictate our performance,” Harris said.
“I start the season with only one expectation - that we improve.
“That we improve as a club, that we improve as a team, and that we improve as individuals.”
The 2014 Season launch included a special ‘On the Couch’ segment, in which Mike Sheahan interviewed Freo senior coach Ross Lyon and captain Matthew Pavlich.
Fremantle’s 2014 season kicks off on Friday 14 March when the club takes on Collingwood at Etihad Stadium.
