A game of tag
If history is anything to go by, opposing stars Stephen Hill and Ryan Griffen are expecting some close attention on Sunday
The talented duo both have a history of being tagged in recent matches between the two teams.
Hill, who has been in strong form lately, told 6PR’s Sports Today Bulldog Liam Picken had played on him a number of times and done a very good job.
But Hill said he felt his game had improved enough to help him beat the tag, should it come to him on Sunday.
“I think my inside work has improved a lot more and I’m able to win my own ball, not just winning it on the outside,” he said.
“That’s helped me a lot, not just relying on getting on the outside, but being able to get the hard contested ball.”
Griffen, who has exploded into form in the past fortnight, expected a date with Freo master tagger Ryan Crowley.
The Bulldogs’ skipper said his likely opponent was a fantastic tagger, and added there were not many out there like him.
“He doesn’t mind to chirp a little bit, which is pretty amusing,” Griffen said on 6PR.
“But he’s a great player and the way he goes about his footy, he’s very professional and sticks to his task. I’m sure his teammates love him.
“I’ll need plenty of help from my teammates and, if I get that, hopefully I can get away from him.”
Hill said he didn’t mind if the Dogs tagged him on Sunday because of the team’s depth of class in the midfield, including David Mundy and Nat Fyfe.
“I’ve had a couple of games where I haven’t been tagged and they have,” he said.
“If I’m getting tagged, we’ve got David and ‘Fyfey’ running around free.
“If I am tagged, I’ve just got to work through it and we’ve got those other boys to do the damage.”
Hill had 29 disposals to be among Freo’s best in its round 9 win over Geelong.
He said he would continue to search for the consistency that he hoped would take his game to the next level.
“I’m just looking to try and put some consistent footy together,” he said.
“I probably haven’t done that in the past and that’s something I’ve been trying to do this year.
“I’m just going into games with focuses on what I want to do and I think that’s helped me a lot.”
