Fremantle’s Amy Lavell was pleased by the team's ability to bounce back despite losing to the Western Bulldogs 7.7(49) to 3.5(23) on Sunday at VU Whitten Oval.

The Freo Dockers were kept scoreless in the first half of their opening round NAB AFL Women’s clash before a strong comeback in the third quarter saw the side kick the opening three goals and cut the margin to 15 points.

“We got held up on the back foot early and they got on top of us, unfortunately,” Lavell said. 

“But we played a really good third quarter and if we can do that for a full game, then we can really have a good season.”

The Fremantle vice captain helped get Fremantle rolling in the third term, converting two goals and Ashley Sharp followed her lead to add a third.

“It was nice to contribute to the comeback in the game,” Lavell said.

“It was so pleasing to see that we actually played our game in the third quarter and it shows that if we do play to our structure and our shape, that we can really put it up as a team.” 

Lavell said the focus is now to play a full four-quarter game in the team’s trademark style.  

“It’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint,” Lavell said. 

“We’ve still got six games to go where we can show the top footy that we want to play and we saw that in the third quarter.”
