Fremantle debutant Lachie Weller will never forget the anxious walk to senior coach Ross Lyon’s office on Friday to be told he will play his first game of AFL.

The 19-year-old is just the second debutant for Fremantle this year, after Alex Pearce debuted earlier in the year.

Weller said he was called to Lyon’s office mid-gym session.

“I got sent upstairs when I was in the gym and Ross just sat me down,” he said.

“ He had a talk to me and said I was playing.’

Weller was Fremantle’s top selection at pick 13 in last year’s National Draft.

It will be a couple of sleepless nights before Sunday’s game for Weller, who said playing AFL was his dream.

“I am really excited, it’s been a long time coming, it’s a dream come true,” he said.

His first phone call to share the news was to his proud parents on the east coast.

“It had to be mum and dad, they were pretty excited,” he said.

“It was a pretty special moment to be able to ring them and tell them to book a flight to get over to Perth as quick as they can.”

Football runs in the Weller family, his brother Maverick Weller plays for St Kilda.

“He told me not to be afraid and take the game on, but don’t go out there and set the world on fire, just play your role,” Lachie said.

“It’s going to be a really good experience, something that I am really looking forward to.

“(Freo fans) are really passionate fans and I reckon it will be pretty loud.”
