For the winner of Saturday’s Qualifying Final, a valuable spot in a home Preliminary Final awaits.

Another chapter in the growing Fremantle versus Sydney rivalry will be written.

The clubs have met three times in finals previously – with the ledger in Sydney’s favour with two wins.

We take a look back at the previous contests, as we look forward to Saturday’s mouth-watering match-up.

Preliminary Final, 2006

ANZ Stadium, Sydney

Sydney Swans 19.13 (127)

Fremantle 14.8 (92)

Crowd: 61,373

It was the first time Fremantle had made the penultimate finals round in its history.

With its Semi Final win over Melbourne, Freo booked its spot against the reigning premiers.

A daunting prospect at ANZ Stadium.

The Swans entered the match after a thrilling one-point win over West Coast two weeks earlier.

To the surprise of many, Fremantle went goal for goal with Sydney in the first term.

However, the Paul Roos-led Swans proved their pedigree in a 35-point win.

Matthew Pavlich (4), Peter Bell (3), Troy Cook (2) and Ryan Crowley (2) were among the goals.

Bell was best on ground with 24 touches.

Preliminary Final, 2013

Domain Stadium, Perth

Fremantle 14.15 (99)

Sydney 11.8 (74)

Crowd: 61,373

Fremantle turned the tables in the next finals encounter, winning its way into its first Grand Final.

Freo had earned a week off after a backs-against-the-wall win over Geelong at its Simonds Stadium fortress in round one of the finals.

Sydney took the long road after losing to Hawthorn in week one, it beat Carlton at home to setup the mouth-watering contest with Freo.

A rampant second term, in which Freo booted five unanswered goals, setup the 25-point win.

Sydney’s half-time score of 2.2 (14) was the lowest ever in a finals match.

Michael Walters stamped his name on the finals with three goals while Matthew Pavlich (3), Nat Fyfe (3) and Nick Suban (3) got amongst the goals.

David Mundy and Paul Duffield had 29 touches each.

Fremantle 10.9 (69)

With Sydney winning the minor premiership, fourth placed Freo headed to Sydney.

Lance Franklin showed his class with a two final quarter goals that sealed Sydney’s 24-point win.

Fremantle missed defender Michael Johnson’s influence in the back-50.

Pavlich again stood tall with four of Freo’s 10 goals, while Lachie Neale had 31 touches.
