There was an extra big smile out on the training track on Monday at Victor George Kailis Oval as forward Liam Henry had his first session with Fremantle’s main group.
The exciting no.9 draft pick from the 2019 NAB National Draft has been rehabbing a dislocated kneecap injury sustained when playing for Christ Church last August.
Henry made his return in a light session that focused on each player’s individual traits, with the 18-year-old working primarily on ground balls, tackling and goal kicking with his fellow forwards.
He said working with his teammates made the morning extra special.
“It was enjoyable, obviously the boys got around me for my first session since I got here because of my knee injury,” Henry said.
“It’s definitely enjoyable, a lot better than actually doing conditioning and running around the oval. I’m getting a bit of footwork and footy back in, that’s what I’m here for.
“I got the chance to bunch in with the group and build that connection. I’ve been in rehab for the past three months and I obviously haven’t trained since August last year.
“It’s definitely good to get back into footy and I can’t wait to progress.”
As well as rehabbing from injury, Henry is also building his fitness to train and play at AFL level.
He said he would only take part in a handful of drills in Wednesday’s main training session.
“We’ll have a main session on Wednesday and I’ll do a little bit then,” Henry said.
“(The strength and conditioning team) don’t want me to jump straight back into things, they just want me to work back into it slow and steady. I hopefully have a long career head and I can’t wait to get into full training.”
