Sabreena Duffy’s four-goal haul may have stolen the headlines following Freo’s 16-point win against Geelong on Sunday at Fremantle Oval, but defender Ange Stannett earned a heap of praise for her efforts in the fourth quarter.

With Fremantle holding a four-point, Stannett’s brilliant running effort helped save a certain Geelong goal – winning a one-on-one with Madisen Maguire that prevented the Cats from taking the lead with under five minutes left to play.

Fellow defender Philipa Seth worked seamlessly with Stannett in the play, collecting the footy after Stannet shepherded her opponent.

Seth had nothing but praise for her teammate.

“It was a very big moment, we knew going into it, we didn’t want (Geelong) to get any goals out the back,” Seth said.

“I knew Ange would cover some good ground, get it really quickly and get it to ground.

“I definitely backed her in to do that and knew that Maguire would be pretty hot on her, so I needed to get to her quick to lend a hand.

“Ange did her job perfectly and left it wide open for me to pick it up and get it out of our 50 so, phew, we saved it!”

Seth said that Freo would take a lot from the contest leading into the first RAC Derby W on Saturday at Optus Stadium.

“It was a brilliant win, the first one of the season and it’s always good to have it at home as well,” Seth said.

“The crowd definitely played their part, they were really loud.

“I went into the fourth quarter pretty confident as I knew the stats were in our favour, I knew we just had to close it out.”
