Irish recruit Kate Flood is fired up to get her first official AFL Women’s game under her belt when she makes her debut for Fremantle against Geelong on Sunday at Fremantle Oval.
Flood had a taste of Aussie rules action in Fremantle’s two practice games leading into the season and the forward has totally embraced her new sport.
“Even now I’m still pinching myself to think that I’m over here in sunny Perth playing this unbelievable game,” Flood said.
“It’s an amazing sport. I’m just really excited and looking forward to it and I’ll be taking this opportunity with both hands and running with it.”
Flood has had plenty of experience of playing in front of big crowds in Ireland and was looking forward to taking in the atmosphere at Fremantle Oval.
“In Gaelic, the last game I played for Louth there were about 46,000 at Croke Park but that was spread over three games,” Flood said.
“It will be exciting to see the crowds that we get here. I can’t wait.”
Flood said there also will a be pocket of Ireland among the Purple Army.
“My boyfriend Aaron is over until July and he’ll be here for all the games,” Flood said.
“My cousin lives in Darwin so they’ll be flying in with a few other Irish friends. They’re will only be a handful of them but I’m sure you’ll hear them.”
