#10 A new beginning
On September 30 this year, Justin Longmuir was appointed as our new senior coach. Just over a month later on 4 November, JL stood in front of the entire playing group for the very first time. Day 1 of the 2020 pre-season had begun and so too a brand-new chapter at Freo.
#9 Players stand against racism.
A striking image with an even more important message. Our boys linked arms with the Lions players in a strong stance against racism after the final match of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round. With a total of 34 Indigenous men and 10 Indigenous women featuring on our playing list across our 25-year history, we are extremely proud of our Indigenous heritage and culture.
#8 Milli’s ‘best day ever’
The 12-year-old had just undergone surgery to remove a brain tumour and is a huge Freo Dockers fan. Milli and her family were invited down to experience gameday from ground level. They joined the players in the rooms, had a kick-to-kick with Joel Hamling and a jumper presentation from Nat Fyfe, before Milli headed out to the middle of Optus Stadium to toss the coin. At the end of the game Milli was one of the first to run on to the ground to celebrate, with the win making sure that special smile didn’t disappear for the entire day.
#7 Why six was afraid of seven
We had some big moments on the field in 2019 but this was one of the biggest moments off-field for the club. Securing picks seven, eight and nine in the NAB AFL National Draft shone a positive light on the season ahead and gives fans plenty to look forward to with the drafts of Haydn, Caleb and Liam.
#6 The 300 club
David Mundy is chaired off after a stellar performance in his 300th game, officially joining Matthew Pavlich as only the second Fremantle player, as well as WA-based player, to reach the milestone.
#5 Finals bound
It was a do-or-die clash against North Melbourne in round 7, and didn’t our girls stand up to the challenge. Our AFLW team booked their spot in the 2019 preliminary final against Carlton, creating history as they went. You can feel the emotion in this now iconic image, as the girls proudly sung the theme song alongside our passionate AFLW members and fans.
#4 Hanging up the boots
When it’s all said and done, Aaron Sandilands and Hayden Ballantyne are just two best mates who enjoyed their time on the footy field. This photo was taken moments after the pair played their final game together at home after announcing their retirement earlier in the week. Their chapter on-field for Freo was complete, and now it was time to have a laugh, reflect on the memories they had created and spend time with their families.
#3 History made
An historic moment for the Fremantle Football Club. Justin Longmuir returned home to Freo in October to become our new senior coach. Sitting alongside president Dale Alcock and GM football Peter Bell, it was all smiles as JL was announced as the man to lead us from the front.
#2 Sonny makes every post a winner
A moment Freo fans definitely won’t forget from 2019, Michael Walters winning the game after the siren against Brisbane. With scores level, Sonny let fly with a set shot from 45m out, hitting the post to give us a one-point victory over the Lions in round 10.
#1 Fyfe joins the greats
Becoming just the 15th player in VFL/AFL history to claim multiple Brownlow medals, Nat Fyfe claimed footy’s highest individual honour in 2019. Polling 33 votes, Fyfe brought ‘Charlie’ home for the second time in his career finishing six votes clear of Patrick Cripps in second place. This was a huge moment for Nat and a very proud one for all members and Freo fans.
