The City of Cockburn’s regional physical activity and education centre at Cockburn Central West achieved a key milestone yesterday with the State Government granting planning approval for the $106 million project, which will also house the Fremantle Dockers’ new elite training and administration facility.
The City of Cockburn had submitted its application to the Government’s Development Assessment Panel, which yesterday formally advised the council of its decision to approve the project development application.
Cockburn mayor Logan Howlett said the milestone was a great achievement for the project team which had worked hard to design a state-of-the-art building that would “serve many community members across the south-west metropolitan region”.
“The approval now paves the way for the city and the Fremantle Football Club to complete the tendering process for the main building contract,” he said.
“The City of Cockburn would like to again thank the State and Federal Governments as our major funding partners who have provided a total of $22.4 million towards this development.”
The approval means that a builder for the project could be appointed in early 2015.
Fremantle Football Club president Steve Harris said as well as housing the club’s new training and administration base, the important community asset would deliver a world class facility to the region.
“It is a world-class project that will provide a tremendous benefit to what is a rapidly growing region and place the club at the forefront of integrated elite sporting and community facilities in Australia,” Harris said.
“The Cockburn Central West site, which is within the greater Fremantle Region, also provides greater prospects for future expansion, community engagement and supporter interaction.”
