Footy fun at Freo
The playing group put some youngsters through their paces last on Fremantle Oval last Wednesday
Sutcliffe, who is entering his second year of AFL football, said it wasn’t that long ago that he was attending one of these days as a fan.
“I remember when I was younger, coming down to days like this, or having footy players come to our school,” he said.
“When you’re a kid it’s a big deal, so it’s good to be able to get out among the kids and have some fun.
“It gets us out of the gym and footy meetings for a bit, so that’s a good thing, too.”
The 20-year-old teamed up with Alex Silvagni, teaching the eager four to five–year-olds skipping and handballing skills.
Chris Mayne proved he was the king of the kids, taking some of the young guns on in a game of cat and mouse.
One speedy student ran rings around the Freo forward in one part of the drill, encouraging the rest of the group to help ‘Mayney’ out to win the game.
Josh Mellington took some time out, teaching a young girl how to do a sit-up properly.
She took a while to get the gist of it, but Mellington persevered and they got there in the end.
Constable Care came down for the day, joining Johnny ‘the Doc’ Docker who was greeted with a loud round of applause and plenty of hugs when he went around to meet all the kids.
More than 450 students aged five to six years participated in the Freo Fundamentals Gala day.
Schools that attended included Australian Islamic College (Kewdale), Victoria Park PS, Orange Grove PS, Marmion PS, St Patricks PS (Fremantle) and Cooloongup PS.
