A serious back injury had Michael Johnson questioning whether he would play again but the key defender has returned and is a crucial factor in Freo’s unbeaten start to the year.

Johnson was cruelly sidelined just before last year’s finals series and underwent surgery in September.

His absence was notable against Sydney’s tall timber in the Qualifying Final, which Freo lost by 24 points.

He signed a contract extension on Tuesday, committing to the club until the end of 2017.

Johnson repays the faith

Johnson admits the injury did have him questioning his career.

“It did go through my head but I have faith in the medical staff and specialists,” he said.

Much of the pre-season was spent steadily lifting his work rate while rehabilitating his back.

His step back into the team has been welcome this year and will be key against Sydney on Saturday.

“I’m nice and strong and moving well on the ground,” he said.

“It hasn’t slowed me down at all, I think I’m playing really good footy at the moment.”

Johnson returned to the side during the NAB Challenge.

“It was really good to get out there and play….I am feeling really good at the moment,” he said.

“Just like every other player with injuries, I have to do certain exercises each week.”

Fremantle take on Sydney on Saturday 25 April in the 20th annual Len Hall Tribute Match at Domain Stadium. Bounce down is at 6.45pm.
