He may be the most talked about player in the AFL this year but Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe is looking forward to nothing more than heading home for a few quiet days away from the spotlight.
Fyfe has been in rare touch in 2015, featuring in Fremantle’s best performers.
He leads the AFL for most disposals and is averaging a hefty 31.5 touches per game.
Fyfe said his four-day break would be spent with his family in Lake Grace.
“I’ll get home and see my family,” he said.
Lake Grace is remote and could not be much further from the 24/7 AFL cycle.
It is 345km from Perth in the heart of the state’s Wheatbelt and is home to just 507 people.
It is the town that moulded Fyfe, on field at the Lake Grace Pingrup Bombers, and off field through his family’s transport business.
He loves nothing more than climbing back into the cabin of a semi-trailer.
Fyfe told afl.com.au earlier this year that the trucking company has been a constant and important part of his life.
“From a really young age, both my brother and I loved the trucks,” he said.
“We loved going to work as earlier as we could and coming back as late as we could.
“There is a real rawness and solitude you get from being out on the open road for hours at a time, just yourself and your thoughts…it’s like a form of meditation.”
Fyfe said the break was important for players’ mental health, not just their physical recovery.
“I’ll really just remove myself from the footy environment as much as I can for a few days,” he said.
“The guys will enjoy getting away, giving the body a rest, let the bruises heal over for a while and get their heads out of footy for a few days.”
