It is an indiscriminate suburban street in eastern Perth, but another chapter in the folklore of Bushby Street, Midvale has been written.
The street is famous in AFL circles for producing Fremantle’s Michael Walters, West Coast’s Nic Naitanui and Richmond’s Chris Yarran.
New Fremantle recruit Shane Yarran, Chris’ cousin, also grew up on the street, learning his footy craft with the trio.
“My grandparents lived on the same street with Chris and Nic,” Yarran said.
“We all lived on the same street, went to school together and kicked the footy out on the paddocks.
“It was a good childhood, we had plenty of days kicking the footy on the road.”
Desire never extinguished
Walters, or ‘Son Son’ as he is known around the club, was one of the first players to welcome Yarran to Fremantle.
Yarran said Walters would be a great support to him.
“I’ve known ‘Son Son’ from when we were children,” he said.
“To be putting on the same colour as him is great.
“There is a lot I’m going to learn from him.”
Both Yarran and Walters have young children.
“I have a baby girl, Scarlett,” he said.
“She is keeping me on my toes as she is crawling.
“It’s amazing, it’s something you can’t really prepare for but you learn and take it as it comes.”
