Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich believes the disappointment of a straight sets exit from last year’s finals series has motivated his team to get 2015 off to the best possible start.

Freo was bundled out of the 2014 finals by Port Adelaide, but this time the home side was able to secure a thrilling seven-point win over the Power at Domain Stadium.

“We put so much hard work into the three or four months of pre-season,” Pavlich said.

“We obviously didn’t finish the way we really wanted to last year and that’s what’s fuelled the desire and the willpower of the boys over summer.

“It’s really satisfying to come away with the victory against a side that we really rate.”

Pavlich’s influence on the contest was supreme with the Fremantle captain stepping up with four goals after arguably his best pre-season in the AFL.

Game breaker: Pavlich the difference

“I was able to do a large portion of the pre-season, which gives me a huge amount of confidence going into the season proper,” he said.

“One game though doesn’t make a season.

“Whilst it’s nice to hit the scoreboard tonight and have an influence on the game, there’s a long way to go.”

Pavlich said senior coach Ross Lyon was pleased with how Freo finished off the match.

Ross Lyon post-match Q & A

“He (Lyon) was really pleased with our effort and our desire to get over the line,” Pavlich said.

“As always in every game there are things to work on.

“Overall, I don’t think you can ask for more effort.”

Freo’s next target is Geelong at Simonds Stadium and there’s no doubt what Pavlich will be doing tomorrow afternoon.

“Firstly we’ll relax and unwind and recover well,” he said.

“It’s always a big hit-out in the first week.

“Obviously we’ll have a look at the Cats tomorrow against the Hawks and really prepare well.

“We love playing against them…they’re a fantastic side and have been for a long time.

“We look forward to getting down to Geelong and competing fiercely.”

Freo takes on Geelong on Sunday 12 April at Simonds Stadium.

Bounce down is 11.10am WST.
