Luke McPharlin says getting traded from Hawthorn to Fremantle when he was just 19 was a defining moment in his life.
McPharlin played 12 games for the Hawks from 2000 to 2001, and as fate would have it, will play his 250th AFL game against his old team on Sunday.
He admits most footy fans probably would not remember he once donned the brown and gold stripes.
“I’m not sure many would remember I used to play for Hawthorn, it’s been 14 years,” he said.
“I was just 19, about to turn 20.”
McPharlin arrived at Fremantle in 2002 and has since then carved out a career as one of the best defenders in the league.
He will play his 238th game for the club at Aurora Stadium.
McPharlin said he jumped at the chance to return to his home state of Western Australia.
“I was thrilled at the prospect of coming home and playing in front of family and friends,” he said.
“My dad and I watched Fremantle play together.
“In hindsight, it’s been the right decision for me.”
McPharlin’s career honours so far include selection in the All Australian team in 2012 and induction as a Fremantle life member in 2010.
