NAT Fyfe’s Brownlow chances have been dealt a crippling blow — and Fremantle’s premiership hopes have nosedived — with news a serious leg injury threatens to derail the superstar’s season.
The best player in the competition will miss the last two matches of the Dockers’ home-and-away campaign after being diagnosed with periostitis — inflammation in the fibula bone of his left leg.
One medical expert said the injury could lead to a stress fracture.
Periostitis is said to cause tenderness and aching and is considered rare in the fibula bone.
Rest is the only treatment, but Fyfe may not be able to completely overcome the injury before the start of the finals series.

The Brownlow Medal hopes of Fremantle star Nat Fyfe have taken a hit after he was ruled out of the final fortnight of home-and-away matches because of a leg injury and faces a fight to be fit for the finals.
Fyfe, the favourite for the AFL's top individual honour, has inflammation in his fibula in his left leg, a condition known as periostitis.
Fremantle's general manager of football operations Chris Bond said the dynamic utility would miss Sunday's clash against Melbourne at Domain Stadium and the round-23 match against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday week.
"Our medical advice is that Nat should be available for selection after a two-week break," Bond said.

Bookmakers reacted by winding Fyfe’s medal odds, which were as short as $1.60, out to as long as $2.50. West Coast’s Matt Priddis, thought to be at the head of the pack chasing Fyfe, had his odds slashed to as short as $3.75.
The dramatic developments came after the Dockers released a short statement revealing that Fyfe’s home-and-away season was over. In an eventful day that included Fremantle’s announcement on Fyfe.

Fremantle defender Michael Johnson has given his body the thumbs up and is confident that he will be “cherry ripe” for finals.
Johnson has been back for two matches following a serious hamstring injury.
“The first game back was one of those big games in the derby. I just wanted to get out there and get moving and feel confident with my body,” he said.
