It’s official! Round 3 will be the 2018 Starlight Purple Haze Game. It will also be the first time we host an away fixture at our home ground, so members will need to make sure they purchase tickets to this historic match.
Bradley Hill is known for being young at heart, which has made the midfielder a perfect addition as a Starlight Ambassador ahead of the annual Starlight Purple Haze game against Gold Coast at Optus Stadium on Saturday 7 April.
The round three game may be an ‘away’ game on the fixture, but fans will be encouraged to get their tickets and wear purple to give Fremantle as much home-town backing as possible while supporting Starlight for the first Purple Haze game to be played at Optus Stadium.
It will be the 16th running of the Purple Haze game, with $1.2 million raised for seriously ill children and their families since 2003.
To help launch the event, Hill headed to the Starlight Express Room at Princess Margaret Hospital to meet some of the Starlight kids.
“I think I might have had more fun than the kids, I was certainly acting like one!” Hill said.
“It was awesome coming here to see all the kids happy and put a smile on their face. I even got my face painted and turned myself into The Hulk for an hour or so.”
Hill became involved with Starlight in 2017 during his first season at the club when he was a part of the Starlight Wish of 17-year-old Tim Timaepatue of the Tiwi Islands.
“Tim wanted to meet Stephen and I for his Starlight wish, it was an awesome experience for us to see him and his family, considering what he was going through,” Hill said.
“To be able to do work with Starlight for more than just once a year, to come out and help out as many kids as possible, I thought it would be an awesome idea.”
While Hill is working to be ready for round one after suffering a grade one quad strain at training last week, he said spending time with the Starlight kids helped him gain a perspective on the difficulties faced by others.
“No-one wants to see young kids sick and ill, it makes you think about how short life can be and how hard it can be for some people,” Hill said.
“To see kids that are sick, compared to people like ourselves, we’re pretty healthy. To see young kids that are struggling, you do feel for them.
“I’ve heard a few stories from some parents and you do feel for them but they were saying thanks so much for coming out. They’ve enjoyed it, the kids have had a blast and it’s just good to see them happy.”
Tickets for the game are on sale now and members have an exclusive opportunity to purchase their reserved seat.
Because the round 3 fixture against the Suns is an away game it is not included in 2018 11-game reserved seat membership packages and, as such, 2018 membership cards will not entitle members access to the game.
The round 3 away game against the Suns will be the first time in history that a WA-based AFL team will play an away game at home against an interstate side for premiership points in an AFL season.
