Fremantle ruckman Aaron Sandilands says he was surprised to win his second Doig Medal on Saturday night.
Sandilands romped home in the best and fairest count with a stunning second half to the season, polling 282 votes, just five more than David Mundy who finished in second.
Midfielders Stephen Hill and Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe roundered out the top four that was announced at a ceremony at Crown Perth.
“It was a bit of a shock to be honest,” Sandilands said.
“We’ve had a number of players who have had great years.
“Fyfey obviously won the Brownlow and Mundy is All Australian.”
Sandilands takes out second Doig Medal
Sandilands won his first Doig Medal in 2009 and is now one of just four players to have won the club’s most prestigious accolade more than once.
A humble Sandilands said his sole focus all year was team success.
“We’ve all got the same goal,” he said.
“We’ve fallen short this year but I believe we’ve got the list and the talent to get it done.
Sandilands praised the club’s fitness and physio staff for keeping him injury free for the season.
“We’ve got the best fitness staff and medicos in the business,” he said.
“They’ve had a great program from the start of the year, they know how to manage the body and get me up for game time.
I wasn’t expecting that: Sandilands
